Left parties organised demonstrations across Visakhapatnam on Friday, October 9, opposing the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and demanding the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
CPI(M) activists held a rally from their district office in Pithapuram Colony towards the National Highway at Maddilapalem, where they staged a protest. Party leaders B. Ganga Rao and P. Mani alleged that the SIR exercise could deprive eligible citizens of their voting rights and demanded that it be withdrawn.
Other demonstrations were reported at Purna Market, Malkapuram, Kommadi Junction, Arilova, Pendurthi and Kancharapalem. At Kancharapalem, CPI leaders demanded a judicial inquiry into the Election Commission’s conduct and the restoration of names allegedly removed from electoral rolls.
Left party representatives also raised concerns about the scale of voter deletions. These figures and allegations were claims made by the protesters and have not been independently established by the reports. They warned that the agitation could intensify if their demands were not addressed.
The protests form part of a wider political dispute over the SIR process and the functioning of the Election Commission of India. The demands raised in Visakhapatnam include halting the revision exercise and ensuring that eligible voters retain their right to participate in elections.
