Potential Cyclone Brewing in Bay of Bengal, Andhra Pradesh–Odisha Coast on Watch

Weather forecasters are closely monitoring a developing system over the Bay of Bengal that could bring unsettled weather to Andhra Pradesh and Odisha towards the end of October. According to a report by Deccan Chronicle published on October 20, the system may strengthen into a depression and could potentially develop into a cyclonic storm.

The India Meteorological Department’s coastal weather bulletin states that an upper-air cyclonic circulation over the Gulf of Thailand and adjoining areas is expected to move into the North Andaman Sea around October 21. Under its influence, a low-pressure area is likely to form over the southeast and adjoining east-central Bay of Bengal around October 23. The system is then expected to move northwestwards and intensify over the subsequent three days.

The Deccan Chronicle report indicates that the system could develop into a depression by October 27 and potentially strengthen into a cyclone within the next two days. It also reports that a possible landfall zone could lie between north coastal Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha by the end of the month. These remain projected possibilities rather than a confirmed landfall forecast.

Meanwhile, coastal Andhra Pradesh may experience rainfall and thunderstorms. The IMD’s bulletin indicates isolated rain or thundershowers along the north Andhra coast and fairly widespread rain or thundershowers along the south Andhra coast for the bulletin’s validity period. Sea conditions may become rough during thunderstorms.

Residents in coastal areas should follow official weather bulletins and local administration advisories. Fishermen should check the latest marine warnings before heading out to sea. The system’s eventual strength, movement and potential coastal impact will become clearer as meteorological agencies continue monitoring its development.

Important: A low-pressure area does not necessarily become a cyclone. The latest IMD bulletin supports the possibility of a developing weather system, but a cyclone and its landfall location have not been confirmed.
