Andhra Medical College in Visakhapatnam has come under scrutiny after two female postgraduate medical students died by suicide within five days, prompting the Medical Education Department to initiate an inquiry. 

The first incident occurred on September 24, involving Dr. P. Sailaja, a final-year MD General Medicine student. The second was reported on September 28, involving Y. Sravani, a first-year postgraduate student in ENT. Both incidents occurred at the students' respective residences in Visakhapatnam. 

According to officials cited by The Indian Express, preliminary information indicated that Sailaja had been distressed about her performance in ongoing examinations. Officials also said Sravani had reportedly enquired about leaving the course midway and transferring elsewhere. Police and college authorities are speaking with family members, friends and administrators while examining different aspects of the cases. 

 

Andhra Medical College principal Dr. K. Sandhya Devi said neither student had complained about problems to senior members of their respective departments, according to the report. The inquiry is expected to examine the circumstances surrounding both deaths.
