The State government has directed authorities to use the experience gained at Velampeta to frame a broader approach for urban redevelopment.

The Velampeta slum redevelopment project in Visakhapatnam is being positioned as a model for similar projects across Andhra Pradesh.

The project has been approved as a pilot initiative under the Visakhapatnam Economic Region programme.

It will focus on improving living conditions while providing modern housing and essential civic infrastructure.

The project covers a site of about 1,986 square metres in Ward 35 of Visakhapatnam.

A total of 177 housing units have been proposed as part of the redevelopment.

The project will use a Design, Build, Finance and Transfer model for implementation.

The redevelopment is expected to provide residents with facilities such as drinking water, sanitation, electricity, internal roads and community amenities. 

Authorities have been asked to monitor the project closely and submit regular progress reports.

The government intends to use the pilot experience to guide the redevelopment of other slum areas under the Visakhapatnam Economic Region programme.

A broader policy for slum redevelopment and middle-class housing is also expected to be prepared.

The initiative highlights the focus on inclusive urban development and better utilisation of limited urban land.

If implemented successfully, Velampeta could become a reference model for future slum redevelopment initiatives across Andhra Pradesh.
