The Visakhapatnam Port Authority (VPA) is observing its 93rd Foundation Day on October 7, marking more than nine decades since the port was opened to ocean traffic in 1933. The port's history dates back to the arrival of the passenger vessel S.S. Jaladurga in 1933. India Live
VPA recorded its highest-ever annual cargo throughput of 91.17 million tonnes (MMT) in 2025-26, compared with the much smaller 0.13 MMT handled during its first year of operations. During April–September 2026, the port handled 46.14 MMT, representing a 7% increase over the corresponding period of the previous year. India Live
The port is currently undertaking infrastructure projects worth around ₹615 crore. Among the major initiatives is a ₹334.89-crore internal flyover system aimed at eliminating nine railway level crossings. Additional berth mechanisation and operation-and-maintenance projects worth around ₹400 crore are also scheduled for commissioning by March 2027. India Live
VPA is also focusing on technology and sustainability. The port is expanding its solar power capacity from 10 MW to 30 MW, upgrading its sewage treatment plant to 15 MLD, and maintaining around 1,070 acres of green cover. Digital systems, including RFID-based gate management and port-operation software, are being used to improve operational efficiency. India Live
The port's continued expansion strengthens Visakhapatnam's position as an important maritime and logistics hub on India's east coast. The VPA's official information also lists its deep-draft container facilities capable of handling vessels up to 390 metres in length and with a permissible draft of 16 metres.
