Visakhapatnam Railway Station celebrated 130 years of its journey with a Station Mahotsav on September 28, highlighting the city's railway heritage and the station's transformation over more than a century. The celebrations were part of a nationwide initiative by the Ministry of Railways to recognise the historical significance of railway stations. 

The programme began with a flag march, followed by an exhibition of archival photographs and heritage artefacts documenting the evolution of the erstwhile Waltair Division and Visakhapatnam Railway Station. Cultural performances and other commemorative activities were also held. 

A commemorative coffee-table book titled “Waltair Visakhapatnam” was released during the celebrations. The publication documents the station's history, heritage structures and important railway milestones associated with the region. 

South Coast Railway General Manager Sandeep Mathur noted that the station began in 1896 with two platforms and a daily footfall of around 200 passengers. It has since grown into a major railway hub handling more than 65,000 passengers every day across eight platforms. 

Railway authorities have also highlighted plans to expand the station from eight to 14 platforms, as part of its ongoing redevelopment and modernisation.
