Visakhapatnam Railway Station celebrated its 130th anniversary with a Station Mahotsav on September 28, highlighting the station's history and its evolution from the erstwhile Waltair era into a major railway hub. The celebrations included a flag march, historical photo exhibition, heritage artefacts and cultural programmes.
The station began operations in 1896 with two platforms and around 200 passengers a day. According to South Coast Railway General Manager Sandeep Mathur, it has grown to eight platforms and now serves more than 65,000 passengers daily.
A commemorative coffee-table book, ‘Waltair Visakhapatnam’, documenting the railway station's history, heritage structures and important milestones, was also released during the anniversary celebrations.
Railway authorities are also pursuing redevelopment aimed at expanding the station to 14 platforms, along with modern passenger amenities, improved intermodal connectivity and sustainable infrastructure. Separately, the Railway Ministry has approved a ₹299-crore Visakhapatnam Coaching Yard remodelling project, which includes six additional platforms, six additional railway lines, platform widening and a new eastern-side entrance.
