Visakhapatnam Railway Station celebrated 130 years of its journey with a Station Mahotsav on September 28. The celebrations highlighted the station's long association with the city's growth and the history of the railway network in the region. 

The station began operations in 1896 with two platforms and around 200 passengers a day. It has since expanded to eight platforms and now handles more than 65,000 passengers daily, according to South Coast Railway General Manager Sandeep Mathur. 

 

The anniversary programme included a flag march by railway personnel, an exhibition of archival photographs and heritage artefacts, and cultural performances. A coffee-table book documenting the history of the station, heritage structures and important railway milestones was also launched during the event.

Railway officials also highlighted ongoing expansion. According to the South Coast Railway General Manager, work is already underway to increase the number of platforms from eight to 14 in the coming period.
