Andhra Pradesh is bracing for a potentially powerful cyclonic storm developing over the Bay of Bengal, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting a possible landfall between Bapatla and Visakhapatnam on October 28, 2026.
According to the IMD's forecast reported by The Hindu, the weather system was expected to intensify from a depression into a deep depression, followed by a cyclonic storm and then a severe cyclonic storm. It could strengthen further into a very severe cyclonic storm as it approaches the Andhra Pradesh coast.
Strong Winds and Heavy Rainfall Expected
The system is forecast to cross the Andhra Pradesh–Yanam coast with sustained wind speeds of 115–125 km/h, with gusts potentially reaching 140 km/h. These conditions could pose risks to coastal communities, electricity infrastructure, transport and agriculture.
The IMD has warned of heavy to extremely heavy rainfall across several districts between October 27 and 29. Visakhapatnam and Anakapalli are among the districts facing significant rainfall risks, while other parts of coastal Andhra Pradesh could also experience intense rain and strong winds.
Red Alerts and District-Level Preparedness
Red warnings have been issued for extremely heavy rainfall in vulnerable districts during the October 27–28 period. Authorities have been directed to remain alert, monitor weather developments and take precautionary measures to protect residents in low-lying and coastal areas.
District administrations and emergency response agencies are expected to coordinate preparedness efforts as the system approaches. Residents should follow official advisories regarding possible evacuations, travel restrictions and other safety measures.
Fishermen Advised to Stay Away from the Sea
Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea along the affected coastal areas, while fishing boats already at sea have been instructed to return to shore. Rough sea conditions, strong winds and heavy rainfall could make marine activity dangerous.
Residents in coastal and low-lying areas are advised to secure loose outdoor objects, avoid unnecessary travel during severe weather and stay away from fallen electrical wires. People should rely on official IMD and Andhra Pradesh disaster-management updates for the latest warnings.
Cyclone Track Remains Subject to Updates
Although forecasts indicate a possible landfall between Bapatla and Visakhapatnam, the precise location, timing and intensity may change as the system develops. The forecast should therefore be treated as a developing weather threat rather than confirmation that the cyclone will strike a particular city.
The IMD continues to monitor the system and issue updated forecasts. Residents across coastal Andhra Pradesh are urged to remain vigilant and follow instructions from local authorities.
