The ambitious Bhogapuram Airport project, officially named Alluri Sitarama Raju International Airport, is steadily taking shape in Vizianagaram district near Visakhapatnam. With the runway nearing completion and significant progress in terminal construction, the greenfield airport is on track for its targeted operational launch by December 2025.

Designed to handle up to 6 million passengers annually in its initial phase, the airport will eventually scale up to accommodate 18 million passengers per year, positioning it as a key aviation hub in Andhra Pradesh. The state government, in collaboration with GMR Group, is pushing for timely execution, recognizing the airport’s potential to boost regional connectivity, tourism, and economic development.

Key infrastructure milestones such as the 3,800-meter runway, ATC tower, and passenger terminal building are moving ahead as per schedule. The airport is also expected to feature cargo handling facilities, multimodal transport connectivity, and eco-friendly architecture to meet international standards.

This airport is a critical part of Vizag’s transformation into a modern urban center. Once operational, it will reduce the pressure on the current Visakhapatnam Airport and serve as a catalyst for industrial growth in the north-coastal corridor of Andhra Pradesh.
