Visakhapatnam is experiencing a surge in passenger movement ahead of the Dasara holidays, with heavy crowds reported at the Dwaraka RTC Complex, Maddilapalem bus station and railway stations. National highways have also witnessed traffic congestion as families travel to their native places for the festive season.
According to The New Indian Express, schools and colleges are closed from October 10 to 22, adding to the rush as students join their families on holiday journeys. Many passengers are struggling to obtain confirmed train tickets, even after booking well in advance, while high ticket prices are increasing travel expenses.
To accommodate the additional demand, the South Coast Railway has introduced special trains for the Dasara period. Meanwhile, the Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) has planned around 420 special buses from Visakhapatnam between October 9 and 22.
These buses connect Vizag with destinations including Vijayawada, Rajamahendravaram, Hyderabad, Amalapuram and several towns across North Andhra, such as Srikakulam, Tekkali, Palasa, Parvathipuram, Palakonda, Salur and Vizianagaram.
The festive period also coincides with Navaratri celebrations across the city, with Kali Matha idols installed in several localities and devotees gathering to offer prayers to Goddess Durga.
As many residents leave the city for several days, Visakhapatnam City Police has advised them to take precautions against theft and house burglaries. Residents have been asked to secure valuables, inform neighbours or apartment security staff before leaving, and notify their nearest police station or beat constable if their homes will remain unattended.
