Fire Breaks Out at Visakhapatnam Steel Plant After Molten Steel Spill, No Casualties Reported

A fire incident occurred at the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant on May 19, 2025, after approximately 300 tonnes of molten steel accidentally spilled during transportation operations. The sudden release of molten material triggered a fire in a section of the facility, prompting emergency response teams to act swiftly.

Fortunately, there were no casualties or injuries reported. Firefighting units deployed on-site successfully brought the situation under control before the fire could spread to other critical areas. The steel plant management confirmed that standard emergency protocols were followed and the fire was contained within a short time.

Preliminary reports suggest that the spill may have been caused by a malfunction in the transportation mechanism used to move molten steel from the converter to the casting area. An internal investigation is currently underway to determine the exact cause and assess whether any safety lapses occurred.

The Visakhapatnam Steel Plant, operated by Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (RINL), is one of India's largest public sector steel producers. This incident adds to growing safety concerns surrounding heavy industrial operations in the region, especially as the plant has recently been in the spotlight over privatization debates and labor disputes.

Officials have assured the public that plant operations have resumed safely and that additional safety checks are being implemented to prevent similar incidents in the future.
