A 28‑year‑old fisherman, Chodapalli Yeriya, from Pudimadaka village (Anakapalle district), was pulled into the sea by a large black (blue) marlin during a routine fishing expedition about 20 nautical miles off the Andhra Pradesh coast. The incident occurred while Yeriya was line-fishing aboard a motorized boat alongside three other fishermen. As he attempted to reel in the catch, the powerful fish yanked him into deep waters, and he has since gone missing .
Despite immediate efforts by the crew and nearby fishing boats, Yeriya could not be located. Coastal security police and local fishermen launched a large-scale search operation, combing the area continuously on July 3 and continuing into July 4.
This tragic event mirrors an earlier 2022 incident in which a black marlin fatally impaled fisherman Molli Joganna off the same coast. Marlins—known locally as “Kommu Konam”—are massive, fast, and sporting sharp beaks, capable of pulling caught lines with extreme force.
Authorities warn that deep-sea fishing for such large species carries significant risks. The fisheries department advises that in such scenarios, the sheer power of a hooked marlin can easily drag someone overboard unintentionally .
The search operation is ongoing, involving coastal security units and local volunteers. Yeriya’s family and community await hopeful news, but time is critical.
