The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) is planning to establish approximately 25 dedicated feeding zones for stray dogs across Visakhapatnam. The initiative aims to help residents and animal lovers feed stray dogs at designated locations instead of leaving food on roads, footpaths and other public spaces.
The civic body has already established three feeding zones. The third was inaugurated in the APIIC Greenbelt area at Autonagar, Gajuwaka, with support from the Kamal Welfare Foundation. The designated areas include feeding bowls and drinking-water troughs to support the organised feeding of stray animals.
GVMC City Veterinary Officer Dr K. Kiran Kumar said the corporation was identifying suitable locations for additional zones under a special action plan. The Kamal Welfare Foundation has offered to support the establishment of around 25 zones through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funding.
The initiative is intended to balance animal welfare with public convenience and sanitation. GVMC has appealed to animal lovers to use designated feeding points and encouraged voluntary organisations and industrial establishments to support the programme.
The proposed expansion is expected to make stray-dog feeding more organised while helping reduce food waste and littering in public areas.
