India and the Commonwealth Games History

The history of the Commonwealth Games dates back to 1891 when the competition was first proposed by John Astley Cooper to bring together the members of the British Empire. In 1930, the Commonwealth Games were actually called the British Empire Games.
Since 2002, athletes with disabilities have also been included as full members of their national teams, which made the Commonwealth Games the first fully inclusive international multi-sport event. In 2018, CWG was the first global multi-sport event to have an equal number of women's and men's medal events. In 2022, they became the first event to have a greater number of events for women than for men.

After the 2022 CWG, India's overall medal count stood at 564 medals, including 203 gold, 190 silver, and 171 bronze. Overall, India is currently ranked fourth in the world. Pre-independence, India first participated in the Commonwealth Games in the second edition in 1934. Since post-independence, the Republic of India joined the Commonwealth Games in 1947.
