Election activity is gathering momentum across Visakhapatnam as political parties prepare for the second general elections to the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC). Several prospective candidates and former corporators have begun mobilising supporters, while major parties, including the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and YSR Congress Party (YSRCP), were still discussing their nominees as of Thursday, October 15. The nomination process was scheduled to begin on Friday, October 16.
District Collector and District Election Officer M. Abhisikth Kishore reviewed election preparedness at a meeting attended by Police Commissioner Shankhabrata Bagchi, GVMC Commissioner Ketan Garg and other officials. He directed departments to coordinate closely, follow State Election Commission guidelines and complete basic amenities at polling stations on time. Training for polling personnel and micro-observers, postal ballots, and the safe handling of election materials were also discussed.
According to the report, 18,37,901 voters are expected to vote across the corporation’s 120 wards. For security, 6,548 police personnel are to be deployed, with special arrangements for sensitive and critical polling stations. The administration has also formed teams to monitor the Model Code of Conduct, conduct inspections and track election expenditure.
