The Raipur–Visakhapatnam Economic Corridor is a major highway project designed to improve connectivity between Chhattisgarh, Odisha and Andhra Pradesh. Developed by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) under the Bharatmala Pariyojana, the approximately 465-km corridor is planned as a six-lane, access-controlled highway.
According to OdishaTV’s report published on October 17, the corridor is expected to reduce the journey between Raipur and Visakhapatnam from 12–14 hours to around 5–6 hours, depending on route conditions and operational requirements. The new alignment is also expected to shorten the distance compared with the existing route.
Around 240.37 km of the corridor passes through Odisha, covering parts of Nabarangpur and Koraput districts. The project includes tunnels, bridges, viaducts, interchanges and underpasses to facilitate smoother movement through hilly terrain. Advanced traffic management systems, surveillance cameras and emergency communication facilities are also planned to improve road safety.
The corridor is expected to strengthen freight connectivity with Visakhapatnam Port, potentially reducing transport costs and improving the movement of minerals and other goods. It could also improve access to markets, employment and essential services in remote areas along the route. However, the anticipated travel-time reduction will depend on the corridor’s completion and operational conditions.
