Visakhapatnam is set to move forward with a comprehensive coastal protection plan aimed at addressing persistent sea erosion along its shoreline. The Andhra Pradesh State Cabinet has given in-principle approval for preparing a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the project, estimated to cost between ₹172 crore and ₹175 crore.
The proposed project will cover vulnerable stretches between RK Beach and Bheemunipatnam, also known as Bheemili. Coastal erosion has repeatedly affected sandy beaches, footpaths and public spaces, particularly during periods of strong waves and monsoon high tides.
According to reports, authorities have identified 30 erosion-prone locations along the coastal corridor. Priority areas include the INS Kursura Submarine Museum surroundings, Coconut Arena near Sea Hotel, the coastal children’s park, Rushikonda, Mangamaripeta and Bheemili.
The proposed solutions include submerged offshore reefs, groynes to influence sand movement, controlled sand nourishment and bio-shield plantations. These measures are intended to provide a more systematic, long-term approach than relying solely on temporary interventions such as dumping boulders.
The project’s detailed design and implementation plans will be developed through the DPR process. The latest report describes the Cabinet’s approval as in-principle approval for preparing the DPR, rather than confirmation that all construction work has begun.
