Visakhapatnam International Airport to End Civilian Operations from July 8

Visakhapatnam International Airport will officially stop handling civilian flight operations from July 8, as all commercial services are shifted to the newly developed Alluri Sitarama Raju International Airport at Bhogapuram. The existing airport, which operates as a civil enclave under the Indian Navy's INS Dega, will thereafter be used exclusively for naval operations.

The transition marks the end of more than 60 years of commercial aviation services from the current airport, which has served millions of passengers and played a vital role in connecting Visakhapatnam with major cities across India and abroad. The new Bhogapuram airport has been developed to accommodate future passenger growth and larger aircraft while offering modern aviation infrastructure.

While the new airport is expected to enhance long-term connectivity and boost economic development, the relocation has sparked concerns among residents, businesses, and public representatives. Many have pointed out that the new airport is located around 50 kilometres from Visakhapatnam city, potentially increasing travel time and transportation costs for passengers.

Authorities have advised passengers to carefully verify their departure airport before travelling, as airlines will begin operating from Bhogapuram once the transition takes effect. Officials believe the new international airport will strengthen Andhra Pradesh's aviation network and support the region's tourism, trade, and investment opportunities.
