Vizag Motorists Demand Crackdown on Stray Cattle on Roads

Stray cattle roaming on roads have become a road safety concern in Visakhapatnam, with motorists calling for stronger action to prevent traffic disruptions and accidents.

Cattle wandering onto busy roads can force drivers to brake suddenly or swerve to avoid collisions. The risk can be particularly serious for two-wheeler riders, who are more vulnerable to sudden obstacles. Stray animals can also obstruct traffic, especially at busy junctions and during peak commuting hours.

The issue is not new to the city. Previous reports have highlighted the challenges faced by the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) in keeping stray cattle off public roads. In 2018, the Times of India reported that cattle roaming the streets were contributing to traffic congestion and minor accidents, despite enforcement efforts by civic authorities.

Motorists are seeking more effective and consistent action to address the problem. Measures could include regular cattle-removal drives, identifying and penalising owners who allow their animals to roam freely, and ensuring that impounded cattle are kept in appropriate shelters.

Coordination between the municipal corporation, traffic police and animal husbandry authorities could help improve enforcement and reduce risks to road users. At the same time, any action involving the removal of cattle should ensure proper animal care and humane handling.

With road safety remaining a key urban concern, motorists want sustained action rather than temporary drives to make Visakhapatnam's roads safer for commuters and pedestrians.
