Visakhapatnam Police denied permission for a rally proposed by Green Visakha over concerns surrounding upcoming data-centre projects.

The environmental group wanted to organise a public demonstration to highlight potential environmental risks associated with hyperscale data centres.

The proposed projects have raised concerns over water availability, wildlife and ecological impact in and around Visakhapatnam.

Green Visakha has been particularly vocal about the pressure that large data centres could place on the city’s already stressed water resources.

The group has also raised concerns regarding the proximity of some proposed projects to ecologically sensitive areas. 

Residents who gathered at the Bhagat Singh statue were reportedly informed that the procession had not been granted permission.

After discussions with the police, the gathering was allowed to take a group photograph before dispersing. 

The proposed rally comes amid increasing public debate over Visakhapatnam’s emergence as a major AI and data-centre hub.

Supporters of the projects highlight their potential to bring investment, technology infrastructure and employment opportunities to the region.

Environmental groups, however, are seeking stronger scrutiny and safeguards before large-scale projects expand further.

The Andhra Pradesh Government has said legitimate concerns can be addressed and has defended the projects against allegations of inadequate environmental consideration. 

Google has also said its project will use advanced air-cooling and sound-dampening technologies to reduce environmental impacts. 

The issue is expected to remain a key point of discussion as Vizag balances rapid digital growth with environmental and community concerns.
