Visakhapatnam Port is exploring opportunities to use Singapore’s expertise as it continues its modernisation drive. The port is working towards increasing its capacity from around 85 million tonnes to 125 million tonnes over the next few years. A delegation led by Indian Ports Association Chairman Sanjay Bhatia recently visited Singapore along with senior officials from Visakhapatnam and other major Indian ports. The team studied Singapore’s systems for container handling, bunkering and transshipment. Officials are examining areas where Singapore’s experience could be adapted to Indian port operations. One area under consideration is upgrading port connectivity software to enable smoother coordination with Customs, railways and other stakeholders. Vizag Port may also seek consultancy and technical assistance to strengthen its bunkering operations. Singapore is one of the world’s leading bunkering hubs, making its experience particularly relevant to the proposed improvements. Officials also examined Singapore’s cruise terminal and other maritime infrastructure during the visit. The delegation’s broader objective was to understand international best practices and explore opportunities for investment and collaboration. The initiative could support Vizag Port’s ambition to become a more modern and globally competitive maritime hub.
