YSRCP leader and former Andhra Pradesh Minister Gudivada Amarnath has accused the Centre and State governments of colluding over the proposed privatisation of the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant. He alleged that decisions taken since June 2024 have resulted in a significant reduction in the plant’s workforce. According to his claims, around 6,500 contract workers have been laid off, while thousands of permanent employees have left through voluntary or age-based retirement. He also raised concerns over the proposed withdrawal of CISF personnel from the steel plant. The Centre has separately approved the withdrawal of CISF Security and Fire Wings from the facility by November 17, 2026. Amarnath argued that these developments could weaken the plant’s operational and security framework. He reiterated the YSRCP’s opposition to privatisation and called for sustainable measures to revive the financially stressed plant. The party has previously demanded stronger financial and operational support for the facility. The Centre had announced a ₹11,440-crore revival package for RINL in January 2025. The Andhra Pradesh government and ruling alliance leaders have previously rejected allegations that the plant is being privatised. The issue remains politically sensitive in Visakhapatnam, where the steel plant has significant economic and social importance.
