Residents of Madhurawada and other parts of Visakhapatnam’s rapidly growing northern corridor are set to benefit from a new 24×7 drinking water supply system using Godavari water. The ₹725.18-crore project is being developed to address the intermittent municipal water supply in the rain-fed Madhurawada region, where some apartment complexes currently receive water only once every two or three days. 

According to GVMC, civil works are expected to begin in October 2026. The project has an 18-month execution window, with comprehensive commercial operation targeted for April 2029. The planned system will route Godavari water through a network connecting Yeleru, KBR, Meghadrigedda and the Mudasarlova reservoir before distribution to the northern corridor. 

The project is designed to initially serve a population of around 2.5 lakh. It includes a 65 MLD water treatment plant, 417 km of distribution pipelines, 7,900 KL of storage capacity and 37,407 smart-meter connections. SCADA monitoring, GIS mapping and district metered areas are also planned as part of the system. 

 

The project is being funded through the Centre’s Urban Challenge Fund, a GVMC contribution and a term loan. GVMC Commissioner Ketan Garg said the aim is to move the area from intermittent supply towards a continuously pressurised water network as Madhurawada continues to grow residentially and commercially.
