Ambitious Semilunar-Shaped Ring Road Planned to Transform Visakhapatnam
In a visionary move aimed at meeting the evolving needs of its growing population, Visakhapatnam is set to witness the construction of a Semilunar-Shaped Ring Road (SRR) within the Visakhapatnam Metropolitan Region Development Authority (VMRDA) limits.
This ambitious project, which promises to enhance the city's connectivity and infrastructure, is a joint effort involving various stakeholders, including the VMRDA, Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC), and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).
According to preliminary plans, the SRR will stretch from the picturesque Pudimadaka Beach in Anakapalli district in the southern part of the city and extend all the way to the scenic Bhogapuram Beach in Vizianagaram district. This extensive road network is poised to become a major transportation artery for the region.
This ambitious endeavor comes on the heels of the proposed Vizag Metro Rail project, which is set to connect Anakapalli to Bhogapuram via several key locations, including Gajuwaka, Akkayapalem, Maddilapalem, Madhurawada, and Anandapuram along the old highway road.
Given Visakhapatnam's unique geography with the Bay of Bengal Sea on its eastern side, the SRR has been aptly named to reflect its semilunar shape.
As the project progresses, a Detailed Project Report (DPR) is currently in preparation, and an internal meeting involving relevant departments will be convened in the near future. Several government departments, including tourism, roads & buildings, police, industries, fisheries, and revenue, will play integral roles in advancing this transformative initiative.
GVMC Commissioner C.M. Saikanth Varma confirmed the SRR project proposal, emphasizing that it involves connecting the existing six-lane National Highway-16 from Anakapalli to Bhogapuram via Pendurthi and Anandapuram.
The initial plan involves constructing a six-lane road connecting the highway at its southern and northern points, effectively linking Pudimadaka to Anakapalli via Achyutapuram in the south and Bhogapuram Beach to the highway in Bhogapuram via the Greenfield Airport.
VMRDA sources underscored the significance of the SRR in light of Visakhapatnam's aspiration to attain Executive Capital status. Additionally, this road will facilitate further infrastructural development in the city's outlying areas without impacting the existing core of Visakhapatnam.
An optimistic VMRDA official revealed that the SRR project, covering approximately 100 kilometers, would leverage existing highway stretches for nearly 70% of its length, thereby requiring relatively modest funding. It is anticipated that Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy will review the project during an upcoming urban development meeting before the general elections.
The Semilunar-Shaped Ring Road is not just a transportation initiative; it represents a transformative step forward for Visakhapatnam, promising improved connectivity, regional development, and a brighter future for the city and its residents.
