Vizag MP M Sribharat Advocates Strategic Measures to Bolster India's Maritime Sector
In a recent parliamentary session, Visakhapatnam Member of Parliament (MP) M Sribharat underscored the critical need for comprehensive reforms to enhance India's maritime capabilities, aligning with the nation's burgeoning international trade demands. His advocacy centered on pivotal areas such as reducing freight costs, developing indigenous shipbuilding clusters, deepening port drafts, and promoting cruise tourism.
Advocacy for the Bills of Lading Bill, 2024
MP Sribharat expressed strong support for the Bills of Lading Bill, 2024, emphasizing its role in providing a robust legal framework adaptable to the evolving landscape of international trade. He highlighted the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government's achievements, including the doubling of cargo handling capacities at major ports, nine Indian ports ranking among the top 100 globally, and a significant reduction in turnaround times.
Addressing High Freight Costs
The MP raised concerns about escalating freight costs adversely affecting India's trade competitiveness. He noted that approximately 95% of India's international cargo is transported on foreign vessels, underscoring the urgent need to develop domestic shipbuilding clusters capable of producing large mother ships. This initiative aims to reduce dependency on foreign carriers and enhance the nation's shipping autonomy.
Proposal for Dredging Subsidies
To accommodate mega vessels requiring an 18-meter draft, MP Sribharat highlighted the depth limitations at Indian ports, most of which range between 14 to 16 meters. He proposed implementing dredging subsidies for major ports, including the Visakhapatnam Port Trust (VPT), akin to practices in other countries where governments absorb dredging costs to attract larger vessels. This measure is anticipated to enhance India's competitiveness and facilitate the development of transshipment hubs.
Enhancing Cruise Tourism
Emphasizing the potential of cruise tourism, the MP referenced the ₹100 crore investment in the Vizag cruise terminal. However, he pointed out that the Visakhapatnam Port Authority currently lacks an e-visa facility, which is available at other major ports. He urged the central government to coordinate with the relevant ministry to introduce such a facility at VPA, thereby boosting tourism and economic growth in the region.
Andhra Pradesh's Maritime Potential
MP Sribharat highlighted Andhra Pradesh's 975-kilometer-long coastline and 14 notified minor/non-major ports, indicating substantial growth potential in the state's maritime sector. He lauded the new maritime policy introduced by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, aimed at modernizing infrastructure and positioning Andhra Pradesh as a key player in global maritime trade.
