Andhra Pradesh has notified the Pedestrian Safety and Universal Accessibility Policy, 2026, making it the first State to introduce such a comprehensive framework. The policy was formally notified on August 7 following approval by the State Cabinet. It aims to make walking safer by improving footpaths, crossings and other pedestrian infrastructure. The framework applies across urban areas as well as rural, peri-urban and satellite-town areas. A minimum clear walking space of two metres has been prescribed for footpaths where applicable. Authorities are expected to remove encroachments and other obstacles that restrict pedestrian movement. The policy also promotes safer pedestrian crossings and universal accessibility features for persons with disabilities. Road safety audits will be used to identify infrastructure gaps and high-risk locations. Local authorities will be responsible for improving existing infrastructure as well as incorporating pedestrian-friendly designs into new projects. The policy also provides for accountability when infrastructure or design failures contribute to pedestrian deaths or disabilities. Officials, contractors and consultants can face penalties of up to ₹1 lakh under the relevant provisions. The initiative seeks to shift road planning from a vehicle-focused approach towards safer and more inclusive streets for everyone.
