Article: Vizag Rolls Out Real-Time Adaptive Traffic Signals to Ease City Congestion

After years of delay, Vizag city is finally moving toward smarter traffic management. The Vizag City Police, in partnership with municipal authorities, have begun implementing real-time adaptive traffic signals at several major junctions to tackle peak-hour congestion and improve urban mobility.

Vizag, with a growing population of over 22 lakh residents and 14 lakh+ registered vehicles, has long struggled with traffic jams—especially due to non-synchronized signals and a surge in heavy vehicles entering city roads.

Until now, the city relied on over 90 traditional traffic signals that operated without real-time traffic feedback. This led to frequent gridlocks, especially along busy stretches like Hanumanthuwaka to Maddilapalem and Kommadi to Car Shed Junction, where average peak-hour speeds dropped to just 20–25 km/h.

The new smart traffic system uses AI and sensor-based controls to adapt signal timings dynamically based on live traffic flow. This technology aims to minimize wait times, improve emergency response movement, and reduce emissions caused by long idling.

Leading tech firms like Metafusion, CMS Computers, and NEC India are reportedly in the race to deploy and maintain this intelligent infrastructure.

📢 What This Means for Citizens:

  • Shorter wait times at red lights 🚦

  • Improved fuel efficiency and reduced emissions

  • Better coordination between city signals

  • Relief for over 14 lakh vehicles—especially two-wheelers and public transport

City officials say this is only the beginning, with plans to expand to 50+ critical junctions by early 2026.

Real-Time Adaptive Traffic Signals in Vizag to Improve City Commuting

Vizag City Police have launched a new real-time adaptive traffic signal system at key city junctions to address peak-hour congestion. With over 14 lakh vehicles on the road, this smart traffic solution will drastically improve urban mobility, fuel efficiency, and signal synchronization across Hanumanthuwaka, Maddilapalem, Kommadi, and other busy roads.

This initiative positions Visakhapatnam as a progressive smart city, embracing AI-powered traffic control, sustainable commuting, and urban traffic automation. The system is expected to enhance the average vehicle speed during rush hours and reduce daily commuter frustration.
