Chilling Nights: Temperature Drops Across Vizag City and Agency Areas
A significant drop in night temperatures has swept through Vizag city and the Agency areas, casting a cold wave over Alluri Sitharama Raju (ASR) district.
On the night of December 19, several villages in G. Madugula, G.K Veedhi, Munchingputtu, and Pedabayulu mandals recorded single-digit temperatures, intensifying the prevailing cold wave.
Visakhapatnam city and Anakapalli also experienced a dip in night temperatures, with various areas in Anakapalli and Visakhapatnam (Rural) mandals registering less than 15 degrees Celsius during the night. According to the Andhra Pradesh State Development Planning Society (APDSPS), Kunthalam in G. Madugula mandal recorded the lowest temperature in the undivided Visakhapatnam district in the last 24 hours, plummeting to 7.9 degrees Celsius on December 19 night. G. Madugula, G.K Veedhi, and Borangula followed closely with minimum temperatures of 8.3 degrees Celsius, 9.6 degrees Celsius, and 9.8 degrees Celsius, respectively.
The chilling temperatures continued in other areas as well, with Pedabayalu, Ananthagiri, and Araku Valley recording minimum temperatures around 10 degrees Celsius. The Agricultural Research Station (ARS) at Chintapalli and Paderu reported temperatures of 11.5 degrees Celsius and 11.8 degrees Celsius, respectively. Hukumpeta, along with many areas in Chintapalli and Koyyuru, experienced the coldest temperatures between 12 °C and 14 °C.
The cold spell brought dense fog to Araku Valley, Paderu, Ananthagiri, and Chintapalli mandals. The severe cold, accompanied by wind, has prompted tribal communities in interior hamlets to stay indoors since evening. Many jeep drivers are avoiding early morning rides due to poor visibility.
In response to the challenging conditions, the police in Chintapalli sub-division are assigning night patrolling duties to young personnel due to poor visibility and cold temperatures. The officer noted, "It becomes very cold between 1 a.m. to 3 a.m. Poor visibility due to thick fog makes driving difficult on the ghat roads. We are driving the vehicles with blinkers on. We are avoiding travel on the ghat road after evening unless it is necessary."
Visakhapatnam city is also feeling the impact, with Gajuwaka, Dairyfarm, Gambheeram, Simhachalam, Kapuluppada, Padmanabham, Anandapuram, and Paradesipalem recording minimum temperatures between 15 °C to 19 °C on December 19 night. Residents of various areas, including Pendurthi, Rushikonda, Sagar Nagar, Yendada, Madhurawada, and Akkireddipalem, are enduring the chill, with temperatures dropping below the 15°C mark. Narsipatnam, Golugonda, and Madugula recorded temperatures less than 15 °C, while areas in Kotlavuratla, Butchayyapeta, Chodavaram, Yelamanchali, Kothakota, and S.Rayavaram reported temperatures between 15 °C and 17 °C. Anakapalli town recorded a temperature of 16 degrees Celsius.
