Death Toll Rises to 131 in China's Recent Earthquake, Relief Efforts Underway

The death toll from the recent earthquake in China has reached 131, according to the latest update from the Ministry of Emergency Management.

The impact has been most severe in Gansu province, where 113 people lost their lives, and the neighboring Qinghai province in the Himalayan region, which recorded a rise in the death toll from 14 to 18 since Tuesday, with 16 individuals still reported missing.

In addition to the lives lost, over 700 people have been injured in both provinces. The earthquake, the deadliest in nine years, struck Gansu and Qinghai provinces at 11:59 pm on Monday, with a focal depth of 10 kilometers.

Qinghai province, situated adjacent to the Tibet Himalayan region, is known for its susceptibility to frequent earthquakes due to the shifting of continental plates.

Rescue efforts are ongoing, with 74 people already rescued and 4,298 individuals evacuated. The Ministry of Emergency Management reported that property worth over 15.3 million yuan (about $2.16 million) has been saved. The earthquake has resulted in damage to 155,393 houses in Gansu.

Relief supplies are being mobilized, with the third batch of goods, including 2,000 cotton tents, 5,000 rollaway beds, 5,000 overcoats, and 10,000 quilts, allocated to Gansu.

A total of 133,500 relief items have been sent to Gansu and Qinghai to address the basic needs of those affected.

Efforts are underway to restore normalcy, with traffic resumed on all rural highways connecting affected areas. The Ministry of Transport assures that expressways and national and provincial trunk roads are operating smoothly, facilitating the unimpeded movement of relief personnel, supplies, and vehicles. Additionally, initiatives are in place to restore power supply in the quake-hit areas.

The scale of the disaster necessitates a coordinated and sustained response to ensure the well-being of those affected
