Emerging Concerns as JN.1 Sub-Variant of Omicron Surfaces in India
A new sub-variant of the coronavirus, identified as JN.1, has recently been discovered in a woman from Kerala, sparking worries in the ongoing battle against Covid-19.
The positive case came to light through routine surveillance in Thiruvananthapuram on December 8.
JN.1 is a novel variant of the Omicron sub-variant BA.2.86, distinguished by an additional mutation on its spike protein.
While the potential concerns associated with the JN.1 variant remain unclear, India has observed a significant surge in infection numbers
According to HT’s Covid-19 dashboard, around 252 new infections were reported across the country in the week ending December 17—a substantial increase from 125 the previous week and 59 the week before.
The symptoms induced by JN.1 are reported to be similar to those of other variants, including fever, runny nose, sore throat, headache, and mild gastrointestinal symptoms. However, the existence of distinct symptoms compared to previous variants remains uncertain.
The situation necessitates continued monitoring and research to understand the implications of this emerging sub-variant.
