Falling groundwater levels are intensifying water concerns across several parts of Visakhapatnam.

A deficient and uneven monsoon has reduced groundwater recharge across the district.

Several existing borewells in areas such as MVP Colony, Seethammadhara, Pandurangapuram and Gajuwaka have dried up or are yielding less water.

Residents are increasingly drilling new borewells to maintain access to water for daily needs.

Individual households are reportedly spending around ₹1 lakh to ₹2 lakh on new borewells.

Larger apartment complexes may spend several lakhs depending on the required depth and diameter.

Some families that previously depended on a single borewell are now considering additional sources.

The groundwater situation has also been affected by rapid construction and increasing groundwater extraction over the years.

Visakhapatnam received 56.15% less rainfall than normal between June 1 and August 26, according to the report.

The district recorded 174.6 mm of rainfall against a normal 398.2 mm during the period.

Groundwater levels were recorded at an average of 11.5 metres below ground level as of August 26.

The groundwater level was 3.6 metres lower than on the same date last year.

The situation highlights growing pressure on Vizag’s groundwater resources and the need for stronger recharge and water-management measures.
