Karnataka Hijab Row verdict disappoints the petitioners

The Karnataka High Court struck down its judgment on the hijab issue. The government's decision was supported by the court, and petitions opposing the ban on hijab at educational institutions were dismissed.

The Muslim girls of Udupi, whose petitions seeking permission to wear hijab in classrooms were refused by the Karnataka High Court today (15 March,2022) , said they will not attend college without hijab and will continue to battle the case legally until they receive "justice."

Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai said everyone should abide by the verdict of the High Court on the Hijab row, and cooperate with the government in implementing it. He called for peace and order in the society,  and also asked students to focus on their education, by accepting the court verdict.

The verdict was deemed 'unconstitutional,' according to them. "We had applied to the High Court for permission to wear hijab in the classrooms," she explained. The odds are stacked against us. We will not attend college without wearing the hijab, and we will fight for it. We shall exhaust all legal options.

In January of this year, a significant controversy erupted in the state after a Udupi school outlawed hijab in the classrooms, prompting girls to file a petition in the Karnataka High Court challenging the order. On 25 February,2022  the court had reserved its decision on this matter.

In a statement, the national president of the Students Islamic Organisation of India, Mohammad Ahmad, said, "We don't believe that it is the job of courts to interpret what is essential or non-essential about any faith. We stand with all Muslim women students who are aggrieved by the government order that has been upheld by the court. We are currently seeking legal opinions on possible remedies.

The pre-university education board had released a circular stating that students can wear only the uniform approved by the school administration and no other religious attire will be allowed in colleges.
