Know Interesting Facts About NTPC's Green Hydrogen Hub: An Exclusive with Vizag Development Council Vice Chair O.Naresh Kumar

In a transformative step toward sustainable energy, NTPC Green Energy Ltd. is spearheading India's green hydrogen revolution. To delve deeper into this visionary initiative, we sat down with O. Naresh Kumar, Vice President of Vizag Development Council to discuss NTPC’s groundbreaking green hydrogen project in Pudimadaka, near Visakhapatnam.

Hello Vizag: Mr. Naresh Kumar, can you explain the significance of NTPC's green hydrogen project in Pudimadaka?

O. Naresh Kumar: Absolutely. This project is a milestone under India's National Green Hydrogen Mission and places Andhra Pradesh, especially Visakhapatnam, at the forefront of the green energy transition. NTPC's initiative at Pudimadaka involves an estimated investment of ₹1.8 trillion, covering 1,200 acres. It aims to produce 1,500 tons of green hydrogen and 7,500 tons of green derivatives daily, such as methanol, urea, and sustainable aviation fuel. This will not only meet domestic energy needs but also position India as a global supplier of green chemicals.

Hello Vizag: That’s impressive. Can you shed light on the unique aspect of using seawater for hydrogen production?

O. Naresh Kumar: This is indeed a pioneering step. Producing 1 kg of green hydrogen typically requires 12–13 kg of purified water. Given the water scarcity in India, NTPC’s R&D center, NETRA, has developed an innovative desalination process using waste heat from thermal power plant flue gases. This low-carbon desalination plant at Simhadri, near Visakhapatnam, enables the efficient conversion of seawater into hydrogen-grade water. It’s a sustainable solution that addresses both water and energy challenges.

Hello Vizag: Mr Naresh, as a passionate advocate for Vizag’s development, how do you see this project impacting the region?

Mr Naresh: This project is transformative on multiple levels. It’s not just about energy production—it’s about economic growth, job creation, and positioning Andhra Pradesh as a renewable energy leader. The joint venture between NTPC Green Energy Ltd. and NREDCAP to set up renewable energy projects worth ₹2,00,000 crore will generate over one lakh jobs. It includes 25 GW of solar and wind energy, 10 GW of pumped storage, and 0.5 MMTPA of green hydrogen. Vizag is now poised to become a global hub for green energy innovation.

Hello Vizag: Mr. Naresh, can you elaborate on the broader applications of green hydrogen being developed at the Pudimadaka hub?

Mr Naresh: Certainly. The hub is a comprehensive solution for green chemicals and sustainable manufacturing. Beyond hydrogen production, it focuses on:

1. Green Methanol Production: An eco-friendly alternative for industries and transportation.
2. Hydrogen Mobility: Promoting hydrogen-powered vehicles for clean transportation.
3. Hydrogen Energy Storage: Supporting renewable energy integration and grid stability.
4. Hydrogen Blending with Natural Gas: Reducing carbon intensity in energy distribution.
5. Green Ammonia Production: Sustainable fertilizers and industrial applications.
These initiatives align perfectly with India’s goal to produce 5 million tons of green hydrogen annually by 2030 and decarbonize heavy industries.

Hello Vizag: Mr Naresh, what are your thoughts on NTPC’s role in addressing environmental concerns and global energy demands?

Mr Naresh: NTPC is setting a benchmark for sustainable development. By leveraging seawater and renewable energy, they are addressing environmental concerns while meeting global energy demands. The Pudimadaka hub not only represents a technological breakthrough but also demonstrates India’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions and transitioning to a green economy. For Vizag, this means cleaner air, better employment opportunities, and a step closer to becoming a smart, sustainable city.

Hello Vizag: Lastly, what message would you like to share with the readers?

Mr Naresh: India is at a turning point in its energy journey, and projects like NTPC’s green hydrogen hub are leading the way. The future is green, and it starts here in Vizag. This is not just a project for Andhra Pradesh; it’s a beacon for the entire country.

Vizag is evolving as a hub for innovation and sustainability. This project is a call to action for businesses, policymakers, and citizens to embrace renewable energy and work together toward a cleaner, greener future.

NTPC’s green hydrogen project at Pudimadaka is a testament to India’s ambition to lead the global green energy movement. With visionary leaders like O. Naresh Kumar championing these efforts, the future of sustainable energy in Andhra Pradesh—and India—looks brighter than ever.
