Medical Services to Pause in Visakhapatnam in Response to Kolkata Tragedy

In a poignant response to the recent tragic incident in Kolkata, where a trainee doctor was brutally raped and murdered, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) Visakhapatnam chapter and the Indian Radiological & Imaging Association (IRIA) Visakhapatnam have announced a temporary suspension of medical services.

This measure will be in effect from 6 a.m. on August 17 until 6 a.m. on August 18, with the exception of emergency care and essential services.

During a press conference on Friday evening, IMA A.P. State President J.C. Naidu and IMA Vizag President P.J. Srinivas expressed their deep concern and solidarity with the nationwide protests sparked by this horrific event.

They emphasized the need for stronger legal measures to effectively deter crimes such as rape, murder, and assaults against medical professionals.

This 24-hour suspension is a part of the broader response advocated by the IMA to underscore the urgent need for enhanced protections for healthcare workers and to express the medical community's unified stance on addressing such grave issues.
