World Children's Day marks the anniversary of the adoption of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC). Students of Oakridge, along with more than 60,000 students from 30+ countries from the Nord Anglia Family around the world, came together to spread awareness about the Children's Rights and help them fulfil their potential.

Students in Oakridge International School, Visakhapatnam are raising their voices to make their opinions heard on this World Children's Day. A day that celebrates the power of children to have an impact on the world and a way to ensure that their voices are heard. Students are working around 4 main themes this year - Immunization, Mental Health, Education and Climate Change.

Health and Wellbeing of the people is our priority and getting them vaccinated is critical during this pandemic. Students hosted Fundraiser events through Bake Sale and Food Mela for furthering the Child rights of Education and Immunization.

As per UNICEF more than 168 million children across the world and about 30% students in India have been deprived of Education due to COVID-19 pandemic. IBDP students of Oakridge Visakhapatnam, launched project V4U to help underprivileged children continue their Education during the pandemic. Students also ran book donation drives and launched a Book club to ensure these children are not distanced from their best friend - Books.

Mental wellbeing, a critical aspect of leading a healthy life, is often ignored. Not so at Oakridge. Students launched a school wellbeing club to raise awareness and improve the mental health of fellow Oakridge’s. This was beautifully depicted in the various Skits and acts in the special school assembly on World Children’s Day.

There is no future, if we do not have a place to live. Children realize this and they not only want to talk about Climate Change but take action to revive our mother Earth. Oakridgers adopted UN SDG 13, 14 & 15. Getting their hands dirty to clean up the trash on the beaches of Visakhapatnam to Save our Oceans. They are also learning from Dr. Kerry Emanuel, a Professor of Atmospheric Science in Massachusetts Institute of Technology, about forecasting and communicating extreme weather conditions like Tropical Cyclones.

School Principal Ms. Shaila Bhamidipati said “On this World Children’s Day let each one of us support our children advocating for child rights to envision a better future for every child. No one is too small to make a difference. We at Oakridge are ambitious for our children and I am confident that with the right guidance we can envisage our children emerging as Youth leaders like Malala Yousafzai, Param Jaggi, and Jazz Jennings to name a few.”
