In a remarkable display of medical efficiency and humanity, Visakhapatnam Railway Station witnessed a life-saving intervention late on the night of November 27, 2025. A 24-year-old pregnant passenger, travelling on train no. 22838, went into active labor while suffering from preeclampsia — a high-risk condition marked by severe hypertension.
The passenger, seated in berth 72, reported intense abdominal pain. A quick examination revealed her blood pressure to be a dangerously high 180/100 mmHg, with the fetus exhibiting a heart rate of 148 bpm. Recognizing the urgency, the onboard team immediately coordinated with medical staff at Visakhapatnam Railway Station.
Upon arrival at 11:40 PM, she was swiftly moved to the ambulance positioned at Gate 1. Under the expert care of Dr. Bhashini Priyanka, Divisional Medical Officer, Waltair Division, a normal vaginal delivery was successfully performed at 11:57 PM inside the ambulance. The newborn cried immediately, confirming stable health.
Following the delivery, both mother and child were shifted to the Railway Hospital, Visakhapatnam, where they received further care under the supervision of Chief Medical Superintendent Dr. D. Sharath Babu. After stabilization, the duo was transferred to King George Hospital (KGH) for continued monitoring.
Divisional Railway Manager Shri Lalit Bohra lauded the swift and coordinated response of Dr. Bhashini Priyanka and the medical team, whose timely intervention ensured a safe delivery under challenging circumstances. This incident stands as a proud testament to the dedication and preparedness of the Waltair Railway Division’s healthcare personnel.
