Resident Welfare Associations in Visakhapatnam Mobilize for Rainwater Harvesting

In response to the looming water crisis during the summer months, the Andhra Pradesh Federation of Resident Welfare Associations (APFERWAS) in Visakhapatnam is taking proactive measures to mitigate potential scarcity.

Embracing a forward-thinking approach, they are rallying Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs) across the city to initiate rainwater harvesting projects within their colonies.

With a view to providing a lasting solution to the water scarcity issue, APFERWAS urges each RWA to establish a minimum of four to five rainwater harvesting pits within their respective colonies. The ambitious target is set to be achieved by World Environment Day on June 5.

K.S.R. Murthy, Associate President of APFERWAS, emphasized the simplicity and effectiveness of rainwater harvesting as a long-term remedy for the water crisis. He stressed the importance of locating these pits strategically in areas where rainwater naturally accumulates, such as parks and roadsides.

Moreover, he highlighted the minimal cost involved in setting up these pits compared to the significant benefits they offer.

Recognizing the need for guidance in the implementation process, APFERWAS members pledge their support to RWAs unfamiliar with rainwater harvesting techniques.

Murthy also underscores the importance of selecting locations that do not encroach upon existing civic amenities like footpaths and underground cables.

Encouragingly, some RWAs within the federation have already initiated rainwater harvesting projects, yielding promising results.

Murthy envisions a coordinated effort where all pits are commenced simultaneously on June 5, symbolizing a united front against water scarcity.

Notably, Murthy, also the president of JR Nagar RWA, has been instrumental in spearheading water conservation initiatives in his colony.

Under his leadership, JR Nagar RWA has been recognized with multiple awards for its exemplary efforts in water conservation, setting a benchmark for other RWAs to follow suit.
