Revamping Visakhapatnam's Major Junctions Underway with Swift Progress, Officials Report

A significant transformation is in motion as the redevelopment of major junctions in Visakhapatnam proceeds at a brisk pace, according to local authorities. This endeavor is part of the Junctions Development Project initiated by the smart city division of the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC), focusing on five critical intersections within the city.

These major junctions, namely MVP Circle (located near AS Raja Grounds), Kailasagiri Junction, Jagadamba Junction, Akkayyapalem Junction, and Railway New Colony Junction, have already witnessed substantial progress in their revitalization. The project was kick-started a few weeks ago and has since gained momentum.

GVMC officials reveal that the junctions' redevelopment includes the introduction of aesthetic enhancements, beginning with the transformation of traffic circles and junctions. A water fountain is set to grace these junctions, and greenery will be heightened by planting saplings in their vicinity. Peddle stone walkways will be laid for improved walkability, and the areas surrounding the junctions will be furnished with proper footpaths.

An officer from the corporation explained, "Tabletop speedbreakers are being arranged on all sides of the roads connecting the junctions, following scientific and standardized guidelines."

GVMC authorities report that more than 50% of the junctions' development works have already been completed at nearly all locations. The overall cost for this junction redevelopment project totals around ₹4 crore, with approximately ₹80 lakh allocated to each junction's transformation.

While substantial progress has been made in locations such as MVP Colony, Akkayyapalem, Jagadamba, and Thatichetlapalem, the development at Kailasagiri Junction is picking up speed. Yet, the footpath connecting Kailasagiri Junction and Hanumanthuwaka Junction remains pending.

However, residents in certain areas, such as Akkayyapalem, have expressed concerns that the ongoing works may have led to traffic issues. Some also question the necessity of a water fountain in the junction. K Rajasekhar, a resident of Akkayyapalem, voiced these concerns, stating, "Already, the junction is very small compared to other areas, and the number of vehicles passing through it is always significant due to the presence of a daily market. A water fountain in the Junction near Maharani Parlour may reduce space and create congestion. However, we are not opposed to development and look forward to evaluating the overall outcome."

Apart from the smart city wing, the corporation is concurrently pursuing junction development works in specific locations, supported by funds from the 15th Finance Commission.
