Safety Concerns Rise Among Passengers Following Recent Train Collisions

Visakhapatnam: Concerns and fears loom over train journeys in the wake of two tragic train accidents that have shaken passengers in recent months.

Less than five months have passed since the harrowing train accident near Bahanaga Bazar railway station in Odisha, where the Coromandel Express collided with a stationary goods train, resulting in the derailment of several coaches that collided with the Yeshwantpur-Howrah Express, claiming nearly 300 lives and injuring over 1,200 individuals.

Fresh in the memories of passengers, another heart-wrenching incident occurred in Vizianagaram district, where two passenger trains collided, claiming the lives of 14 people and leaving more than 50 passengers injured.

This collision unfolded on October 29 when a passenger train en route from Visakhapatnam to Rayagada derailed after colliding with the Visakhapatnam-Palasa passenger train near Kothavalasa railway station, between Alamanda and Kantakapalli.

In response to these incidents, a committee has been formed to investigate the details surrounding the Vizianagaram accident. Divisional Railway Manager of Waltair, Saurabh Prasad, explained that the exact reasons for the train collision would be determined following the committee's report.

Simultaneously, the Commission of Railway Safety (CRS) uncovered multiple oversights that contributed to the Balasore train crash. The CRS reported that these lapses could have been prevented with the implementation of corrective measures.

However, the recurrence of train accidents in the East Coast Railway zone within a short span has instilled a sense of apprehension among passengers.

This unease was shared by Rajya Sabha member GVL Narasimha Rao, who penned a letter to Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, highlighting safety concerns in the region. The MP called for a thorough and systematic review of train safety to prevent such accidents in the future.

While extensive restoration and rescue efforts were conducted after the Vizianagaram accident, and train services were eventually resumed after 19 hours, passengers who once looked forward to train journeys no longer feel as secure in this mode of transportation.

As the accidents continue to unfold painful stories of human trauma, many are calling for the Ministry of Railways to prioritize safety measures, aiming for accident-free train travel. Numerous travelers have taken to social media platforms, such as 'X' (formerly known as Twitter), to express their concerns and offer suggestions.

With two major accidents occurring within a short timeframe along the same railway zone, passengers are eager to understand the effective measures implemented by railway authorities to prevent a recurrence of such incidents.
