Supreme Court Demands Answers from NTA Over NEET-UG 2024 Paper Leak Allegations

The Supreme Court has issued a notice to the National Testing Agency (NTA) regarding allegations of a paper leak in the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) Undergraduate (UG) 2024.

This notice was issued following a plea seeking a fresh examination due to reported irregularities.

During Tuesday's session, the Supreme Court's vacation bench, comprising Justice Vikram Nath and Justice Ahsanuddin Amanullah, emphasized the need for clarity on the issue, stating, "Sanctity has been affected, we need answers."

The plea was filed by 10 NEET candidates who raised concerns about the integrity of the examination.

The court, however, declined to halt the ongoing counselling process for admissions to MBBS, BDS, and other medical courses. "We will not stop the counselling.

If you argue further, we will dismiss this," the court asserted. The next hearing on this matter is scheduled for July 8.

The petitioners allege that the NEET-UG 2024 exam, held on May 5 with results announced on June 4, was compromised due to instances of paper leaks.

They argue that this breach violates Article 14 of the Constitution, which ensures the right to equality, by giving unfair advantage to those who accessed leaked materials over those who adhered to the rules.

NEET-UG, administered by the NTA, is a crucial examination for admissions to MBBS, BDS, AYUSH, and other medical courses in both government and private institutions nationwide.

In addition to the primary petition, further legal actions have been initiated concerning the NTA's decision to award grace marks to several candidates. Alakh Pandey,

CEO of Physics Wallah, has filed petitions regarding the awarding of 70 to 80 grace marks to approximately 1,500 students. Pandey, who gathered signatures from around 20,000 students, is pushing for greater transparency from the NTA.

"The court has indicated that our matter will also be taken up with the other matters, but the court is clear that it will not stay the counselling process at this stage," stated Advocate J Sai Deepak.

Pandey added, "Our PIL, scheduled for tomorrow, addresses not only the paper leak but also the grace marks and overall transparency of the NTA's processes. Students initially demanded justification solely on the grounds of the paper leak, and this remains a critical issue."

As the controversy unfolds, the Supreme Court's response and the outcomes of these hearings will be pivotal in determining the future course of NEET-UG 2024 and ensuring the integrity of the examination process.
