Tribal Women Lead Protest Against Granite Quarrying in Kotnabelli Village
Visakhapatnam: A public hearing in Kotnabelli village, led by Narsipatnam RDO V.V. Ramana, Pollution Control Board JE Karuna Kumari, and MRO Venkataramana, saw strong opposition from tribal women and villagers over a proposal to permit granite quarrying by Ashrita Enterprises.
Tribal women, symbolically carrying empty water pots, protested the quarry, highlighting their urgent need for clean water over commercial activities. Despite police urging them to voice their concerns calmly, many expressed fears about environmental damage and loss of community lands.
Speakers, including former MPTC A. Ramlu and residents like Edala Appalanayudu, warned of potential destruction to roads and health risks, while CPM’s K. Govinda Rao linked quarrying to serious health problems. In contrast, former ZPTC Asari Govinda Rao supported the quarry, citing potential benefits.
The RDO assured attendees that the government would consider their concerns before making a decision.
