UPSC Chairman Manoj Soni has resigned from his position, citing “personal reasons,” five years before his term was scheduled to end. Soni submitted his resignation letter approximately two weeks ago, though it has not yet been formally accepted by the top brass. 

Despite his resignation, sources have clarified that it is not related to the controversies and allegations surrounding the UPSC, particularly the case involving probationary IAS officer Puja Khedkar.

Soni, who took office as UPSC Chairman on May 16, 2023, was set to serve until May 15, 2029. His resignation comes as he expresses a desire to dedicate more time to “socio-religious activities.” Prior to his UPSC appointment, Soni served three terms as Vice Chancellor at various universities, becoming the youngest-ever Vice Chancellor in India at The Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda from April 2005 to April 2008.

His resignation occurs amid a criminal case against trainee IAS officer Puja Khedkar and her family for allegedly using fake identity documents to gain additional attempts for the civil service examination. This controversy has led to widespread discussions on social media, with users highlighting instances of fake certificates among IAS and IPS officers, prompting calls for police action.
