Venomous Jellyfish Blooms: Concerns Along Visakhapatnam Coast
Marine biologists and researchers are sounding the alarm as venomous jellyfish blooms, including the Pelagia noctiluca species,
Have been spotted along the Visakhapatnam coast in Andhra Pradesh. Experts urge the district administration to take immediate action to safeguard beachgoers from potential dangers.
On April 3rd, a surprising occurrence of Pelagia noctiluca, also known as the mauve stinger or purple-striped jellyfish, was reported across RK Beach and other coastal areas frequented by tourists.
Marine researchers discovered these venomous jellyfish during a routine data collection exercise, prompting concerns due to their painful sting and potential life-threatening effects.
Sri Chakra Pranav, part of the East Coast Conservation Team, emphasized the seriousness of the situation, highlighting the species' ability to cause severe illnesses such as diarrhoea, extreme pain, vomiting, and anaphylactic shock.
The presence of jellyfish blooms underscores the broader issue of rising ocean temperatures, which contribute to their proliferation.
Experts are urging caution and advocating for immediate measures to cordon off affected beach sections and issue advisories to prevent beachgoers from entering the water until the threat subsides.
The incident serves as a reminder of the environmental challenges faced by coastal regions and the need for proactive conservation efforts to mitigate such occurrences in the future.
