New Delhi: Veteran Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader, Sitaram Yechury, passed away at the age of 72 following a prolonged illness.
Yechury, who had been in critical condition, was receiving respiratory support at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi. He had been undergoing treatment in the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for an acute respiratory tract infection.
Born on August 12, 1952, in Chennai, Sitaram Yechury was a prominent figure in Indian politics. He had served as the General Secretary of the CPI(M) since 2015. Yechury spent his early years in Hyderabad and Delhi, where his political journey took root during his college years.
His involvement in student movements, especially at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), made him a key figure in the Students' Federation of India (SFI). His political activism during the Emergency period (1975-77) further cemented his reputation as a strong advocate for civil liberties and left-wing ideologies.
Yechury represented the CPI(M) in the Rajya Sabha for several terms, contributing significantly to the party and the country’s political landscape.

"Sitaram Yechury ji was a protector of the Idea of India, with a deep understanding of our country. I will miss the long discussions we used to have. My sincere condolences to his family, friends, and followers in this hour of grief," he wrote in a post on X(also known as twitter).
