Visakhapatnam Port's Impressive 2023 Performance and Green Initiatives

Visakhapatnam Port Authority (VPA) achieved a remarkable milestone by handling nearly 60 million tonnes of cargo by the end of 2023, with projections indicating a surge to over 80 million tonnes by the fiscal year's close.

The port's efficiency saw a 9% increase in cargo handling compared to the previous year, accompanied by a significant reduction in pre-berthing detention, turnaround time, and idle time at the berth.

VPA Chairman M. Angamuthu shared that the completed international cruise terminal would soon be operational, connecting Vizag, Chennai, and Colombo.

Talks with cruise liners and an MoU with Littoral Cruises Limited for the Chennai-Singapore route signify the port's expansion into the cruise industry.

Looking ahead to 2030, Chairman Angamuthu outlined VPA's transformation into a landlord port through an asset-light model.

The focus includes PPP projects for berth mechanisation, aiming for 100% throughput through PPP terminals by 2030.

To enhance sustainability, the port aims to shift towards rail and inland shipping, reducing road congestion.

The chairman highlighted plans to increase the railway's share in cargo movement from 25% to 60% and boost coastal shipping from 22% to 30%.

Infrastructure improvements, such as the expansion of existing roads and partnerships with NHAI, demonstrate VPA's commitment to smooth traffic flow.

Additionally, the port's dedication to carbon neutrality is evident through its solar power initiatives, having achieved self-sustainability with a 10 MW solar power plant and plans for an additional 15 MW.

Emphasizing adherence to the Maritime India vision, Chairman Angamuthu envisioned VPA's global prominence by 2047 in cargo handling, environmental responsibility, and overall performance.
