Visakhapatnam’s Mahatma Gandhi Cancer Hospital Completes 500 Robotic Cancer Surgeries

Mahatma Gandhi Cancer Hospital & Research Institute (MGCHRI) in MVP Colony, Visakhapatnam, has crossed the milestone of 500 robotic cancer surgeries. The hospital’s Managing Director and Chief Surgical Oncologist, Dr. Murali Krishna Voonna, said the dedicated robotic surgery unit combines surgical precision with multidisciplinary cancer care. 

Among the procedures performed were a robotic left adrenalectomy for a patient with severe hypertension caused by pheochromocytoma and a retroperitoneal lymph-node dissection to remove residual cancerous tissue following chemotherapy for testicular cancer. 

Doctors highlighted that robotic platforms offer enhanced visualisation and precise instrument control, which can be particularly useful when operating in confined anatomical areas close to major blood vessels. The hospital currently uses the da Vinci Si robotic surgical system as part of its cancer-care technology.
The hospital, established in 2005, provides a range of cancer treatments and has specialised teams covering surgical, medical and radiation oncology.
