Visakhapatnam police have stepped up enforcement against private bus drivers after several incidents of drivers allegedly operating long-distance passenger buses under the influence of alcohol. In the latest incident, police intercepted a private sleeper bus bound for Guntur during a random drunk-driving check at Gajuwaka on Sunday night. The driver recorded a blood alcohol concentration of more than 53 mg, exceeding the permissible limit of 30 mg. The Times of India
Police said that in another recent case, a private sleeper bus operating between Visakhapatnam and Chennai was found with a driver whose BAC was above 55 mg. The co-driver was also allegedly under the influence, with a BAC exceeding 100 mg. The Times of India
According to police, more than six private bus drivers have been caught driving under the influence of alcohol in Vizag city in the past few months. Cases have been referred to the regional transport authorities for necessary action, including proceedings for cancellation of licences of drivers found guilty of drunk driving. The Times of India
Police have also said that cases are being registered against private bus drivers for over-speeding and rash and negligent driving. Passengers have been urged to alert the police if they suspect that a bus driver is operating the vehicle under the influence of alcohol.
