Visakhapatnam is reeling from the tragic loss of one of its own in the devastating terror attack that struck Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, on April 22, 2025. Among the 28 victims was J. Chandramouli, a 62-year-old retired bank employee and long-time resident of Pandurangapuram.
Chandramouli was on a leisure trip with a group of tourists when militants affiliated with The Resistance Front (TRF) opened fire on civilians in the Baisaran meadow, one of Kashmir’s scenic destinations. Eyewitnesses reported that Chandramouli pleaded for his life before being shot at close range, highlighting the senseless brutality of the attackers.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the coastal city of Visakhapatnam, where Chandramouli was known for his humble nature and active participation in local community events. His family, shattered by the sudden loss, has traveled to Jammu and Kashmir to complete formalities and bring his body home.
Local leaders, including Member of Parliament M. Sribharat, have expressed deep condolences to the bereaved family and have called for strict action against those responsible. The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) observed a minute of silence at its headquarters in memory of the departed.
Security has been heightened in Visakhapatnam following the attack, particularly around major transportation hubs and public gathering places, as a precautionary measure.
The broader Pahalgam attack, which claimed 28 lives and left more than 20 injured, has drawn international condemnation and renewed debates over safety in tourist destinations within conflict-sensitive zones.
Chandramouli’s death is a solemn reminder of how acts of terror can devastate families and communities across the country, regardless of geography. Vigils are being planned in Visakhapatnam in his memory, and support is being extended to his grieving family.
