Visakhapatnam is rapidly emerging as a sports development hub in Andhra Pradesh, with recent investments and initiatives aimed at nurturing talent and enhancing sporting infrastructure. In April 2025, several key projects and proposals have begun to take shape, marking a transformative period for the city’s athletic landscape.

A significant highlight is the establishment of the PV Sindhu Center for Badminton and Sports Excellence. Spearheaded by Olympic medalist PV Sindhu, the center aims to provide world-class training facilities for young athletes in badminton and other sports. Located in the heart of the city, the facility is expected to include indoor courts, fitness centers, and residential accommodation for trainees, aligning with global standards.

Local Member of Parliament M. Sribharat has also put forth a proposal for setting up a National Centre of Excellence (NCE) in Visakhapatnam. The goal is to provide specialized training in multiple sports disciplines, create employment opportunities, and attract national and international tournaments to the region. He has emphasized that Visakhapatnam’s coastal location, youth demographic, and growing infrastructure make it an ideal candidate for such a prestigious institution.

 

Additionally, existing stadiums and public sports complexes across the city are undergoing upgrades, including lighting, seating capacity, turf maintenance, and modern sports technology installations. These enhancements are designed to host large-scale events and encourage greater community participation in sports.

The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) has also initiated grassroots sports development programs in collaboration with schools and NGOs, focusing on early talent identification and inclusive sports education.

These efforts align with the broader vision of positioning Visakhapatnam as a central player in India's sports ecosystem, offering top-tier facilities and nurturing the next generation of sporting champions.
